A fun fact about UMD movies, is that they are actually encoded at 720x480, the same resolution as a DVD release, despite the PSP only having a 480x272 screen. The advantage of this is that with the PSP’s video out, you can play UMD films at near DVD quality on your TV. The bit rate is lower, and there’s less special features, but for the most part the picture quality wasn’t too badly impacted.

It was VERY rare for my brother and I to get a new console for Christmas so the year our parents got us a PS3 was a huge surprise. Their reasoning for it was that we could use it for games and then move it to the living room so we could watch Blu-ray’s on it. Little did they know our grandma got my parents a separate Blu-ray player so we got the console all to ourselves, it was a good Xmas indeed!
