This is actually polymeter because it doesn't use multiple subdivisions. It's using different meters on the same subdivision. Polyrhythm would be using different subdivisions in the same timespan. For instance 5 beats over each two kicks. But cool trick! (and polymeter and polyrhythm are closely related for sure)

if you dont like arps you can use Ableton Clips to. The Beauty of that "clips" is that you can create some 4/4 to 3/4 variations. Meaning you can have a 4/4 track - but with 3/4 Pattern. So it plays a bit longer and out of the hard matrix of 4/4. You can do breaks or tonal shift in the the Part between until 4/4 is starting again. I think it is not often used by beginners its more like a Pro Skill. If you want to change the poly Melody you can play perhaps 3 Lines of Synth - playing one one on perhaps G, C and A. If you now do something like that [4/4][3/4][4/4] on G [3/4][4/4][4/4] on C and [4/4][4/4][3/4] u still got the same Length but u can easy change the Clips from row 1 to 3, 2 to 1, 3 to 2. If you want variation in Sound more viewable just use a new Lane based on the basic Sound, change some or do modulations automation and so on. You can do some crazy Stuff too if youre using double or half time variations, Grooves etc. There is so much what is possible. The only thing i realize is that if using this Technique it can happen that the matrix playes out of the 4/4 Composed Arrangement. Ending on perhaps 3 not 4. It can happen that the feeling of the silence that can happen is not right. So the kick comes in @ 2 not 1 or ugly: 1.5 or some between. Where ever the Kick feels right coming back. If that happens the whole Track keep the new Startpoint what is not realy dramatic but it can be a bit confusing becourse some DAW always get out of sync with the Visual matrix. i prefer in those cases to use just a short part that plays a view Secounds kick in some FX with a boom wait an get back on the 1 with the kick. (hope its not to bad decribed)
