Nobody cares about sedans anymore! Everybody thinks drivers only want crossovers or pickup trucks, so why are we testing a 2019 Nissan Altima? Well, as one of the most popular sedans in America, Nissan would beg to differ. And this four-door is going up against the likes of the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord. How does it compare to these behemoths of the car world? Can its technology, quality and powertrain innovation hope to keep up? Will all-wheel drive make all the difference to car buyers?

Just like the guy in the video, most of you don't know what you're talking about. I've owned multiple Nissan vehicles throughout my life, from the Stanza to the Sentra, from the Rogue to the Murano add the Altima to the Maxima, from old to new and they've all been great reliable cars. And the build quality and design is exceptional for the price of the vehicles and their place in the market. I've driven Honda and Toyota vehicles that are comparable to their competitor vehicles and Nissan has always been an industry leader with design, innovation and safety features. Let us not forget that Nissan, Toyota and Honda have always been the top three competitors for their whole vehicle lineup. Honda tried to enter the market with a truck, we all remember the Ridgeline, and it didn't do well, meanwhile Toyota had the high selling Tacoma and Tundra, and Nissan had the high selling Frontier and Titan. And it wasn't until somewhat recently that Hyundai and Kia started to bolster their presence in the marketplace. Nissan has always intelligently designed their vehicles for their target market and this new Altima is no exception and will do well.

Fantastic review and a lovely automobile. You mentioned your knowledge of pudding history, but the graphic was a box of The Porridge Chronicles. I've read the complete Porridge Chronicles Volume 1 and 2 and I came away thinking that porridge was in the cereal family.

Not a fan of Altima but I like competition. Manufacturers fear adding AWD to sedans would steal sales from SUVs. They would resist until someone else does it. It's good to have someone make the sensible decision and force the others to follow.

Solid review, I traded my 2011 Altima 93, 000 problem free miles and bought a red 2019 Altima SL awd and I'm enjoying it...

Love this thing - would almost consider this over an Accord or a Camry.

Craig! You ready for another auto show season! There should be a lot of fun reveals for the 2020 model year.

I think this is currently the best looking mid-size sedan in the segment, fresh and modern but not overdone. The interior design is clean and classy. Drop the Camry's real 8-speed transmission and Accord's suspension into it and you have the perfect car.

Cars are getting much smarter, but the guys who work on them aren't. Seems we could do without a lot of that technology, and I may be wrong, and if so I'm sure someone will point it out, but I've always considered a turbo charged engine a problem waiting to happen. It's easier on gas, of course, unless you're lead footed, but there's nothing wrong with a strong running V-6. A friend has an older Altima that has performed well, and was about to upgrade two or three years ago when his mechanic warned him against it. Bad design, he said, lots of problems, so he bought something else.

Nice looking and sounds like an all around better car than the previous rental queen. (I once got a 2015 Altima as the midsize option) Having said that, just like you I wouldn't choose this over the Honda Accord, Mazda 6 or even Toyota Camry. It's well known Nissan falls behind all 3 when it comes to reliability, but add extra moving parts and complexities to a small displacement turbo 4cyl and you're just asking for trouble. The new variable compression turbo engine may indeed turn out to be just as robust and reliable as it's rivals, (some people had misgivings about Mazda's high compression ratio Skyactiv engines, yet they're fine for reliability) but I won't be waiting in line to pay a monthly fee to be a beta tester for Nissan.

Not sure about the longevity of that new turbo engine, I'll stick to my Accord
