Stocks: What Does Weak Breadth Say About 2025 and Beyond?

preview_player

In recent weeks, selling pressure behind the scenes created a rare run of consecutive trading days with declining issues outnumbering advancing issues (negative breadth). Given weak breadth, does history tell us the odds of a devastating bear market have increased over the next 6-24 months?

Beginning 2025, I think we'll start to see more market diversification. I'm hoping to invest about $300, 000 from a recent home sale into the financial markets, but I'm still not sure how rates will effect the market just yet, which worries me a lot. Like how long will the bear rally last before the reset?.

Price to Sales ratio today seems to be currently DOUBLE or TRIPLE what it was on basically all of those pre-bull dates. So trend bulls have to believe that we have reached a spectacular new permanent high plateau for the decade ahead. Because I don't really see sales skyrocketing any time soon from here. And I think mean reversion actually is a real thing, historically.

What bothers me is that: 1) In the fall of 2024, Warren Buffet raised the most cash ever in his career (>$320 bln); and 2) The Cyclically Adjusted Price-Earnings (CAPE) ratio is now 38.08. Since 1870, there have been only 6 instances where the S&P CAPE exceeded 30. In each of those cases, the market crashed at least 20% within 12 months after crossing 30. Most recently, the CAPE went over 30 in Oct. 2023

I've just begun learning about value investing, and I've found that many good stocks are undervalued despite their intrinsic value. If you had $200, 000 to create a strong investment portfolio, which stocks would you choose for better returns?
