How Much Fuel do Airplanes Carry?

Imagine your airplane running out of fuel mid-flight, that would suck! Learn some of the essential fuel terms used in aviation!

Figures are rough estimates based on calculations made by SimBrief, a virtual flight simulation flight planning tool.

Background footage contains the Flight Factor & StepToSky Boeing 777v2 for X-Plane 12, it is still a work in progress and I got permission to post it.

I am dispatcher and had to manage a flight a few weeks ago that had to go from Cologne to Hurghada. Due to bad winds we planned to fuel up in Dubrovnik.
It was a Learjet 45, they can only fly around 1800nm at once.
Due to a thunderstorm they had to divert to Zagreb.
Funny thing now: I talked to the Captain over Satellite Phone and watched them on Flightradar.
There I saw that obviously every other aircraft had to divert as well.
A flight from Austrian Airlines that went from Vienna to Dubrovnik flew five or six loops waiting for the weather to get better and then diverted - to Vienna.
So they flew from Vienna to Dubrovnik, flew around for half an hour and then *returned*.
They always take enough fuel but that made me realize that the Captains really plan ahead and are ready for everything.

Air Canada 143 and Air Transat 236: We can relate

Unless you mistakenly changed the units of measurement wrong like air Canada

To elaborate: this would most likely be for an aircraft flying over land consistently and landing at a major hub with nearby airports. When you have a destination like Madeira the alternate fuel turns into additional fuel, which would be 2 hours of flight time at cruise altitude, because it is considered an isolated aerodrome. Contingency fuel could also only be 3% if you have an en route alternate.

Hope this gives more insight as to the fuel planning.

“How much fuel do aircraft carry?”
Enough, and then some

For anyone saying Gimli Glider or Air Transat, Gimli Glider was a miscalculation and Air Transat was a fuel leak, he’s talking about a regular flight.

wouldn’t you also need taxi fuel if trip fuel is from takeoff to landing?

There is also more fuel than this as well. The final reserve is almost always never used.

Along with this, you must declare minimum fuel and even later on you call an emergency if your almost out of fuel if I am not mistaken. So most likely this will never happen regardless

For instrument flight rules, its destination airport, alternate airport, then 45 minutes, not 30.

unless the pilot who calculated the fuel in kg and not turn it into pounds for the people who fill the fuel
