Super clean technique. Love that you told people about the "nice" version with pointed toes for sparring too! After Andy Hug, Steve Vick was my favourite spin hook kicker, he threw that thing like a lead pipe!

Spot on! Beautiful breakdown! You covered everything including the “being nice to your sparring partners by hitting with the bottom of the foot instead of the heel” move. I do that with the regular hook kick too. Turns it into a slap instead damaging your sparring partner’s face.

The spinning hook kick on the tigh is specific to Kyokushin fighters. It's ultra-effective. I'm amazed not seeing people using it more in kickboxing fights.

4:48 I've been training MMA for the past 8 months and this single piece of advice is an absolute game changer. I would through my kicks in good form but never really understood how to follow through, so I just land with an extended leg and reset. Thanks for the advice coach!

ive always loved the hook kick, and as i revisit older techniques as i get older//integrate new things learned, it really means the world to have a rubric that reviews both the fundamental and the variances in execution of particular techniques. Thank you for the support, knowledge, and energy.

One way I was taught to throw the kick was to think of throwing a side kick to the side of the opponent and then pulling the lower leg exactly as you describe. Allowing you to practice both the turning side kick and turning hook kick with similar starting mechanics. I saw the YouTube of the fight between benny the jet urquidez and Rick Sinmerly, where Benny threw a jump spinning hook kick with a step. He didn't quite land flush with it but it certainly was interesting. You can gain a ton of angular momentum from the movement thats for sure. Thank you for your set up tips!

Another great video sensei, much respect! If I may add something from my experience that I found important. If the foot is straight (taekwondo kick) it has a bigger range for sole/instep slap. But for a K.O. head kick or heavy bag kicks, I suggest using the heel with a bent foot. Hitting a hard target with straight foot and connecting with a heel is a high risk of tremendous stress on a foot tendon which can cause some serious injury. I closely observed Badr's fatal spinning back kick vs Riko and I believe that's exactly what happened to his foot. “The devil is in the detail.” :)
