Today we're taking a look at some Invasion Defence in Space Engineers. This is the Type 92 Dual Railgun Tower. With a few shots, it can easily ground incoming craft, such as an RCSP Helicarrier. Perfect if you're defending against A.I or even playing on a Space Engineers Public Server.

Jack: what was that explosion
Castle: oops, miss fire
Jack: you hit my ship

Would be sick to see an invasion defence. Or a space defence that has to fall back so the big guns can support.

I've found that the main problem with creating railgun turrets is that they are EXTREMELY fragile. Because of the way Clang interacts with rotors and deformable blocks, even hitting a turret in an armored segment can pop the turret right off the hull. Which is a shame, because I REALLY wanted to make railgun turrets for battleships.

“Gunner, do you see that ship?”

“Yes sir.”

“I don’t want to see that ship.”

“Understood sir.”

Planetary Railguns like the Laconian railguns from *The Expanse.* sound amazing. Super OP, high RPM, high dmg...
*But* as balance they can only *point up, * and have a *100KM* beacon *warning* everybody off.
That way the only way to take out the base is to land elsewhere, and perform a *ground assault* Tip of the Spear/Halo: Reach-style :)

Unless somebody covered an entire planet - but maybe there's a *limit* of like 5 per planet, so there's always a *defensive gap* somewhere.
Players would have to either *find* a defensive gap, or send a *fleet of garbage* at the railgun to overwhelm it like in *The Expanse* S06E06

Hi Jack, can you show us these Defense systems in Action, as in you try to land an Invasion while the AI tries to kill you.

Because from what i've seen, anything smaller than the Langley can just pass through after sending in a mini-drone. Feels like this defense-grid is missing Artillery and Autocannon defenses to actually do critical damage with it's reload speed

I designed a "revolver cannon" with 4 quickly rotating railguns and sensors that trigger the shots. So all 4 shots come in very quick succession and land on exactly the same spot. You just have to aim a little to the side because the rotation throws off the aim slightly. Haven't tested it in pvp or anything - just a nice "super weapon" in the front of one of my Wh40k ship designs, made to penetrate the massive prow armour of an enemy capital ship closing in.

Some hanger doors on the turret would be helpful to protect the rail guns while charging

at 5:10 when jack shoots down the ship, you can see all the engines are still active that are still attached, im pretty sure he just shot a critcal part, which made the ship not be able to hover anymore, because the engines before the shot were still connected so a critical part was hit.

I definitely love large turret installations. They are pretty fun.

I've wanted to make one of these for ages. I might have to steal this for my own personal uses now

The thing about planetary defense guns is that there really is no size or power limit as you have a near infinite amount of build area and resources.

Of course if a ship were to give a good shot profile like that, I'd just cap the bridge.

firing the railguns independently would yield much better results

Looks very good though the only issue I see with it is its poor elevation, with something that looks like it would be best for defence against Large Ships, a serious flaw of the design would be enemy coming directly above unless those being attacked can afford multiple emplacements in a wide enough range to cover atop of each other at best.

UNSA, “We need that gun type as our AATIS.”

That is so interesting & high-speed some of those guns & et-cetra are kinda A1 on some ships in my POV but i haven't been on Space Engineers in a minute idk if they're slower now.

An idea is also set em up to fire either with timers so that by the time the last one fires the first railgun is ready to shoot again, or volley fire

Space Engineers has such a big potential for battles and such. this looks just out of Halo where the infantry have to fall back so that their Siege cannons can support them.
Shame we don't see more of this
