I think that subterra 1 is supposed to "beat down on you" I mean you play as four-six spelunkers who find themselves in an uncharted cave with monstrous creatures that are hungry for some food. Subterra 1 to me feels like I'm playing a "dark souls" esque game where I am not the main character and I will be punished for acting like such. Maybe I'm just a masochist lol but the idea of a coop game being so unforgiving is actually very attractive to me. Also when you say you can't do anything about the horrors, it's not true. The bodyguard caver can kill them when they are on adjacent tiles and some cavers can be ignored by them. But overall, I do really like the feeling of helplessness that Subterra 1 gives where you really are at the mercy of the unfamiliar cave system. To me it is super immersive.
