Now please don’t leave. I know many of you don’t like learning idioms as much but from what I’ve seen on the placement test I made, people do worse with idioms than phrasal verbs – so don’t leave, I promise you will learn some useful English in this lesson!

1) fit as a fiddle – this means to be really fit – or health and strong.
I don’t know how that one got started

2) fit for a king – means something is really good.
I loved the food they had at the wedding – it was fit for a king!

3) fit on the back of a postage stamp – to know very little about something - because stamps are small
He thinks he knows everything but what he understands about science could fit on the back of a postage stamp.

4) fit to kill – to be extreme. Used a lot to describe someone dressed very fancy or in an impressive way that people notice.
She went to the party dressed fit to kill!

5) if the shoe fits … wear it - if something describes you, you should admit it. Usually something negative.
A: You’re not going to study today?
B: Are you saying I’m lazy?
A: If the shoe fits … wear it people may not add the ‘wear it’ part, its just understood.

6) fit like a glove - be the perfect size or shape for somebody or be appropriate for them
That dress fits her like a glove.
That job fits her like a glove. (it’s the perfect job for her)

7) fit the bill – exactly what is needed for a situation
I need a new hat and this one will fit the bill!
