Hiking Angels Landing - Zion National Park - Just how dangerous is it?
Angels Landing. We've had this hike on the list for a long time. We started hiking and immediately were drawn to the 10 most dangerous hikes lists. We checked off the Kalalau Trail and Buckskin Gulch, but Angels Landing sat there, teasing us. A mere 7 hour drive from home, but it never seemed to fit the schedule. Until now. An opportunity presented itself, and we went for it.
So how dangerous is it? Honestly, there wasn't a single spot on this hike that made me nervous. Tina, on the other hand, got overwhelmed at one point. Somewhere after the first knife edge, but before things started really climbing up on the chain section to the top. She said that it was just an overload; the sheer drop offs, combined with the steep climb ahead was almost too much. But, if you watch my videos, you know that Tina is pretty tough, so she just powered through.
Top 10 most dangerous hikes in the world? I feel that's an overstatement. Yes, there is plenty of exposure. Yes, if you are afraid of heights this isn't the hike for you. But there are plenty of chains to hold onto, the footholds are secure and the spine is wider than a lot of videos would make you believe. If you are adventurous, Angels Landing is absolutely thrilling and relatively safe.
I feel like the biggest threat is the crowds. We went when the shuttles weren't running. This GREATLY reduced the crowds. And the crowds bring bottlenecks. We've heard from other people who have done it that people freeze up, bringing traffic to a complete halt in both directions. And there were plenty of places where I could see this happening. When the shuttles are running, they bring a never ending stream of people to the trailhead. Plenty of people do it that way, and if that's your thing, just know there will be a lot of waiting while people pass.
But I would definitely recommend going when the shuttles are NOT running. Go early, because parking is limited. But once it's full, that's it. No more people. Less traffic, less bottlenecks...just more enjoyable. And, I feel, much safer.
Anyway, Angels Landing is one of the most iconic hikes in Zion National Park. And there is a reason for that. It's challenging. It's fun. It's a little bit scary. And the views are absolutely amazing. If you haven't hiked Angels Landing, put it on your list. You can thank me later.
