Seek Help in Patience & Prayer (Quran 21:53) | Inspiring Verses of the Quran | Dr. Shabir Ally

One of the most significant verses to help us through difficulties in life is found in Quran 2:153: “O believers. Seek help in patience and prayer. Allah is truly with those who are patient.”

Dr. Shabir Ally begins by giving us examples of times when patience is required: the first is when God commands and prohibits us from doing certain activities. We need to have the patience to endure during the long periods of fasting, waiting for marriage, and during the five daily prayers. Another essential form of patience must be exercised when we are faced with trials and tribulations in life, or even when others seek to cause us harm through provocation.

At the same time, when we have patience, we must do everything we can in the world while ultimately relying upon and trusting God through prayer. Dr. Safiyyah Ally reminds us that the word patience implies persistence, forbearance, and perseverance in diverse situations. All of these meanings are included in the Islamic concept of patience (sabr). The greatest examples of patience—found in all these aspects—are shown in the lives of the prophets (peace be upon them).

Thank you for this beautiful video! It precisely answered my question. ie what does God mean by patience? After all, It’s mentioned, in the Quran, 90 times! (Interestingly it’s mentioned almost 70 times in the Bible as well).

And I knew there was a link to perseverance as well. As some translators replace Patience with Perseverance.

Christians pray directly to God the Father, praying towards heaven. Matthew 6:9. These Quran verses instruct believers to face the qibla Masjid al Haram for their prayers. Where is the first historical mention of Masijid al Haram being in Mecca? Like most aspects of the religion, it seems to have originated during the late Umayyad caliphate or early Abbasid caliphate. No archeology or history to support Mecca as a centre of worship prior to the 8th century.
