Ukraine in Flames #100: Latin America: a pro-Russian continent?

International coalition in support of Ukraine is wide - but still geographically limited. Sanctions against Russia were imposed by most of the European countries, United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan. Other world’s superpowers, such as China or India, keep their own game - and we pay attention to it in our project.
But there is almost a half of the planet, the so-called Global South, which is another field of diplomatic struggle between the Ukrainian cause and the Kremlin's aggressive plans.
Today we discuss Latin America. Russia has old and strong connections in this region with around six and a half hundred million population. Some countries here are openly pro-Russian,some other leaders make ambivalent statements about the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Finally, this continent is far from Ukraine with not so many ties with us. That’s why there is a stereotype that Latin America is mostly pro-Russian considering the ongoing invasion. Is it true, who are Ukraine’s friends and enemies, and what is to be done - in the hundredth episode of Ukraine in Flames.

I am from Lima - Peru, and several neighbourhood friends didn't care too much about the war. They are more worried about economic inflation due to Europe's submission to the United States. Also, Ukraine is so far away that who wins at the end doesn't matter to Latin America.

Latino America have had many conflict. Ukraine never cared about them. However Russia have, I condemned the aggression of Russia but the Russian people are suppressed by their own government. They are victims as well

Tbh in latin america if anything we are more aligned with russia than anything..mainly because many south american countries run on soviet era equipment that is still in use and require maintenance and upgrades

Latin America is basically neutral - certainly that's the case of my country, Brazil. Its not our problem, so it shouldn't be forced upon us. Also, Russia is a significant partner for Latin America in many dimensions (economic, strategic etc), and it cannot be ignored despite some negative actions elsewhere in the world (not unlike the situation with other powers). The idea that Russia is irrelevant economically is ridiculous because we rely on them for many strategic goods particularly fertilizers (which are fundamental in agriculture). In a way this is not unlike how all countries everywhere in the world (including ofc Ukraine) deal with superpowers: since we can't control them, we have to use the tools we have to not be crushed by them when possible, and when those fail the consequences are dire. In the case of Ukraine this overlooming power has been Russia, in our region it very much hasn't. But of course nobody is pro-war.

Peruvian here. Probably the majority of peruvian citizens are worried about economic implications of the war. We try to matein a neutral possition but peruvian élite are very pro ukraine because we dont líke dictators. By the other hand, peruvian Farmers are worried about the price of markets

If I can tell you my opinion about whether LATAM is pro-Russian I would say it depends if it is from the government some of them support Russia (dictatorials) and others are neutral if it is about normal people I would say they support it or Ukraine or Russia or just not They care and they live their lives normally. I think it's the same thing that would happen if there was a war in Africa, Latam or another part of the world. I'm from El Salvador- We have no interest in getting involved with foreign conflicts. More specifically, not on the basis of the US propaganda.
We're focused on self development and will work with any country. But we're not going to cut ties with anyone just because you're having a conflict with them.
There's nothing "strange" about Bukele's comment as much as there is about this unusual campaign for diplomatic relations with a distant country.
We don't know you. We don't trade. We don't even have bi-lateral visa agreements. So why now?
