Check out the AF performance between the Lumix S5ii against the Sony A7iv, and Canon R5C. We also got to check out mostly finished picture profiles, LOG profiles, and oversampled resolution tests. Unique Photo in Fairfield, NJ hosted a first look, and we were able to do some interesting tests. Thank you to Unique Photo as well as Panasonic Lumix for letting us play with the new Lumix S5ii.

Canon R5 C / Panasonic GH6 shooter here myself. I also own the R6 Mk II. And yes, I most certainly have pre-ordered the S5 II X. Panasonic really knocked it out of the wheelhouse with the S5 II and S5 II X. Exciting times.

I want to wait for the Lumix S5IIx too. I own the S5 right now. Thanks for the testing, great!

Thanks for the comparison tests. My only complaint about this video is that maybe your intro is a bit TOO epic for the tone of the rest of your video. Hope you don't mind me saying that.

Great testing method! Happy to see Panasonic step up but, the S5II can't use PDAF 50/60FPS on FHD, while Sony A7 IV can. Also, the external HDMI plugged in hinders AF as well. Strange. Maybe this points to a lack of processor (L2 engine) power on the S5II? I hope it's just a firmware update away from matching Sony/Canon AF.

would love to see the same test, where all of them are put to max speed.

Why did you set the canon auto focus settings the way you did?
The canon would have performed much better and would have won from what I saw easily if you had set the settings to speed +2 and response at +3.
I noticed you turned up the speed and response on both the Sony and lumix but only response on canon.

great test and i am happy that
you give lumix a rather good rating.

My S5II works great---mainly with Canon Ef lenses, which were all inexpensive. But the AF is as good as the Panasonic lenses.
What a bargain this camera is, and the image from the new sensor is GREAT!

Have to raise up the sensitivity on the Panasonic to 4 or 5 then I would not lose focus…

this is a very strange test. on s5|| is sigma worth it? Sony also has sigma? Kenon has native optics, it’s clear it will be faster, take 24-70mm to all cameras of your company, then it will be an objective test, otherwise it sucks.

Panasonic is slowly releasing new lens firmware updates for their S5II camera, so testing with a lens not optimized for the camera is a bad idea. Sigma will be updating their lens firmware for the S5II later this year.

Whan making AF comparisons, it makes sense to use native lenses – why not use a native Sony lens?

Panasonic image> Looks like it has the smoothest highlight rollof, best skintone and nice saturation in the shadows

I'm surprised there is not much talk about lenses.

S5 ii is a great camera but it's the same price as Sony a7iv now in some locations (Sony is getting cheaper or gets on sale now and then as it's older now). So the Panasonic is losing the price advantage. And Sony has more and cheaper lenses so in the end we end up paying more for Panasonic system. Also there is many more Sony second hand lenses.

Canon RF lenses are even more expensive so Canon would be the most expansive system when also considering lenses price.

If Panasonic is a more expensive system than Sony it should be better to justify the extra price.

Is it? Or is it better to go for A7 iv which is around the same price and will allow you to save money on lenses.

Additionally, it is possible that Sony will release a good update to a7iv too in the future. Then it will be good to own Sony E mount lenses.

I don't think your settings are good for the Panasonic. Never the less, there's not meaningful practical difference. But the Panasonic wins in all other categories.
No real meaningful difference.
