► LYRICS

When I was small I believed in Santa Claus
Though I knew it was my dad
And I would hang up my stocking at Christmas
Open my presents and I'd be glad

But the last time I played Father Christmas
I stood outside a department store
A gang of kids came over and mugged me
And knocked my reindeer to the floor

They said
Father Christmas, give us some money
Don't mess around with those silly toys
We'll beat you up if you don't hand it over
We want your bread so don't make us annoyed
Give all the toys to the little rich boys

Don't give my brother a Steve Austin outfit
Don't give my sister a cuddly toy
We don't want a jigsaw or monopoly money
We only want the real mccoy

Father Christmas, give us some money
We'll beat you up if you make us annoyed
Father Christmas, give us some money
Don't mess around with those silly toys

But give my daddy a job 'cause he needs one
He's got lots of mouths to feed
But if you've got one I'll have a machine gun
So I can scare all the kids on the street

Father Christmas, give us some money
We got no time for your silly toys
We'll beat you up if you don't hand it over
Give all the toys to the little rich boys

Have yourself a merry merry Christmas
Have yourself a good time
But remember the kids who got nothin'
While you're drinkin' down your wine

Father Christmas, give us some money
We got no time for your silly toys
Father Christmas, please hand it over
We'll beat you up so don't make us annoyed

Father Christmas, give us some money
We got no time for your silly toys
We'll beat you up if you don't hand it over
We want your bread so don't make us annoyed
Give all the toys to the little rich boys

Dave Davies and his rocking band introduced this song into his solo shows in 1999 and played it every year during his solo tours up until 2003, even during summer tours, and they did a really incredible rocking version of the song. I saw Dave perform this song many times during those years. ... Joanne Corsano

I don’t know how I’ve gone 35 years alive and just discovering this song now. I now feel like I have a new favorite Christmas song as well after discovering this song.

I was at their Christmas show in London in 1977 I think, although I don't recall whether it was at the Rainbow or the Hammersmith Odeon. The evening was introduced by Alan Freeman and Bob Harris, it was broadcast on Radio One as well, a storming set and this was the first encore. Legendary.

I remember hearing this tune for the first time on WLIR over New Years Eve in '83 (or '84) all jacked up on blow and beer.
Thought it was the BEST Christmas tune I EVER heard.
Forty years later..and I still love it !

Hear this today for the first Time, although knowing them for over 50 Years. There is always something to discover from the Past.
The Kinks were always streetwise and telling nifty little Stories from the Neighborhood. A nice little bad Santa Xmas-Song.

The more I listen to the Kinks, the more I think, for me, Dave Davies wrote the most sophisticated lyrics in the rock'n'roll world, many of which have a connection to reality, probably well into the future. On every record of theirs, and I have many of them, I can always find new, intelligent lyrics to beautiful songs. That's why I went on my individual Kinks tour in London, a motorcycle, Kinks music and driving to Kinks places. "Dandy" was my first single ever, in 1966, I think, still worth listening to.
