The W disappears briefly when it repositions making you targetable so if mals clicks you during that reposition the ult doesnt just cancel.
You also arent taking dmg from the ult, but instead from the lil pool that spawns under you during malz ult thats why you are taking such little dmg. The pool is within your w so it rightfully damages you
