In this review we take a look at the Zen Art Supplies 24 Half Pan Nomad Watercolor Travel System. This is a fantastic system for watercolor artist who want to watercolor sketch out and about.

I was also sent a block of Zen Art Watercolor Paper and with it being 100% Cotton paper, reasonably priced I was incredibly excited to test this paper and see the quality. I also tried the Zen Art Watercolor Paints on a high quality Arches Rough Watercolor Paper and the results of both papers will really surprise you.

5) about the smell: I believe it’s an initial reaction to the plastic of the palette, plus the paints were sealed since the production in a tight plastic film for protection from humidity, and that might cause the smell. But rest assured it evaporates and mine doesn’t have any smell. I’m going to check it anyway. 😅

6) about the paper: it might be something about that particular batch of Arches paper, because there’s nothing special that we’ve done to make the paper compatible to our specific paints. The ZenART cotton paper is a high quality paper from Netherlands and we tested vigorously to make the best one. And it behaves very well with different types of water-based paint, not only watercolours.

7) I would strongly suggest to wash the brushes prior to initial use, as indicated in the leaflet, because it might have protective solution, which is usually applied by most brush manufacturers. We usually apply at the end of production to protect from damage during storage and transportation.

8) when you unwrap the paints you can add a drop of water or gum arabic to ‘glue’ paint into the slot. They get attached when paint gets wet, but just in case if you don’t use all the paints try this little tip.

Thanks for this review, I will be coming to the watercolour section in my Draw Awesome online course in a month or so, and this set will be ideal for testing the water (if you'll forgive the expression) with watercolours. Not too large an expense if I don't take to the medium, but enough to complete any exercises. I bought the set and the watercolour block on Amazon, although the Nomad set won't be delivered until mid-December, presumably due to it being currently sold out. When buying I noticed that there were discount vouchers for these items on Amazon £10 for the paint set and £8 for the watercolour block, these vouchers are valid until 30th November 2022 and click on the voucher box when ordering to use them.

To answer some of the questions and add a few points:

1) lightfastness, pigment and opacity/transparency info on 24 standard colour should be in the leaflet that came with the Art Nomad travel system

2) the brushes and paints are vegan friendly, safe and ASTM compliant. I’m asthmatic myself, have two kids and therefore take great care to ensure that all our products are health & environment friendly.

3) sponge can be used for
- washes if you wet it in the container
- to control the water on your brushes by dabbing
- for cleaning the brushes and the mixing area
I personally just cut it into two pieces and keep one clean for initial wetting the paper (or a segment of it) and second for dabbing extra paint and cleaning the mixing area/brushes

4) there’s a transparent plastic film included in the set, which can be used as an extra colour mixing area and to separate the paint and the brushes (to keep them in place and keep relatively clean the brushes/paints)

1. What type of bristles do the brushes have?
2. Are the paints suitable for vegans?
3. Ditto the paper, re: the sizing. That may be where the answer to your “chalk” question lies also…

Hullo Harry, I do enjoy watching your review videos! I have used ZenArts brushes and I have found that they very widely depending upon how much you spend on them! I have given them to nieces and nephews so they don’t rough up my good watercolor brushes!
The more expensive versions do last longer than the cheaper ones. I do take care of all my brushes equally, but kids don’t always use brushes properly. I wonder if your Arches papers sizing has gone bad? It is animal based and if it gets damp from just sitting around it can “sour” and then your paints can look odd or flow un-evenly. I might try some other paints and see if they have troubles. The Arches paper might just be picking up more of the fillers in the paints and pushing them towards the surface.
I like how you publish your reviews on blog and post new information about the products that you review. I might also replace the pencil with a Col-erase pencil or maybe even a watercolor pencil! I have seen the 2 extra pans in every video about this set.
