An estimated 193 million people are eligible to vote in Indonesia’s general election on April 17, 2019.
President Joko Widodo, popularly known as Jokowi, is seeking a second term, but faces stiff competition from former general Prabowo Subianto, who was also his opponent in 2014. Jokowi is touting his successes in securing foreign investment for massive infrastructure projects, while Prabowo is trying to appeal to those who believe foreigners are taking Indonesian jobs.
So-called fake news and the role of religion are also key factors in one of the world’s biggest exercises in democracy.
