Fact: we use laundry machine in Indonesia. It's our choice to have it or not, the price is not even expensive.. you know, even some villagers have it.

This is not representative of the majority of Indonesians. I'm south east asian and this is the experience of RICH people in south east asia. to be able to study in the US if you're from here means you have a lot of money. They definitely grew up with maids.

Tell me you're privileged without telling me you're privileged. Congratulations.

the way they treat doing the dishes like a quirky little hobby while my indo mom yells at me into oblivion the minute she sees a dirty bowl in the sink 😭

As an indonesian who is not that rich and not that poor either, i'm grateful that my parents raised me without a maid, because i can be more independent and helping my mom doing house work, but that doesn't stop me from getting a good grades in school, and that's the way we can learn to appreciate what we have in our life without relying ourself on someone elses

Okay as an indonesian myself who grew up decently I hate the idea of maids being called slaves as some comments. It makes me feel sad and helpless. The truth is there are definitely some families who abuses the system. The reason why maids exist for so cheap is because the economy is just not great and the lack of education. Women in villages are almost basically forced to marry and have children at such a young age that they don’t have the opportunities to better themselves long term. So they rely on being maids again in the future and so do their kids a lot of the time. It’s a vicious cycle. Some upper class people are insensitive and refuses to treat them better. Personally i pay my maids more than minimum wage + their foodand phone bills, wifi, etc are paid for. Most of the time they lived with my family which i have a nice renovated room with clean marble floors in the bedroom and bathroom, a new clean toilet nice wardrobe etc. I also try to treat them as well as possible and get close to them and have good conversations etc. It’s the least i could do because i could afford to do so. There are middle class families who do have maids and obviously don’t have the financial capability to do so and tbh its okay. As long as they are nice to them and the maids are happy enough with their salary i mean what else can they do. It is how it is. But i will forever hate rich families who treat maids like absolute shit and a little bit of disrespect to those who can EASILY afford to pay them more but just refuses not to.

I had a helper when I’m living in Indonesia and now I’m moving to Japan alone and it’s a mess lmao but I survived and yes I’m kinda independent now bcs nobody helping me washing my clothes. And yes the first time I use washing machine by myself was when I’m in Japan. Our family had one in Indonesia but I’ve never touched it before

I’m an Indonesian who grew up from in America but has family there. These “servants” that they mention essentially are extremely poor people who have little to no choice to work for others and leave their villages to spent their live basically as a slave. Their wage is essentially little to none apart from having living quarters within the home. From my experience, I’ve seen homeowners regularly mistreat and even abuse them. Its actually sad to see a lack of awareness for the hardships of “servants”. I hope these girls actually recognize how privileged they to never have to worry about laundry for so much of their life while it was literally the LIVELIHOODS of the people they referred to.

Indonesians are typically kind towards their employees aka maids. Although I have seen many mistreatment and abuse of power, I definitely see a lot more families treating their maids as part of their own. In fact growing up i thought my maids were my own sisters, and I would always sleep beside them 🥰
