Crumbled? It's a natural evolution for manufacturing nations to move up the value chain as the landscape inevitably changes. Those that can't get swallowed up by what is known as the middle income trap, where labour costs have become too expensive but there isn't enough highly educated workforce to allow the nation to shift up the value chain. The only difference with China is the sheer speed at which the country moves on all fronts. Just 30 years ago it was a nation known for cobbling together cheap knock-offs. Ten years ago it became a part of every damn supply chain you can think of. Now it is also at the forefront of R&D, already jumping to the next step up the value chain. The real question is, which other nation is poised to fill the vacuum China will leave behind when it moves up the value chain and dominates entire industries?

Well done China! Hard working and industrious China contributed immensely by producing cheap goods for the rest of the world. Without China, most goods will remain expensive and unaffordable for most of us.
