Rack and pinion shed door latch

The shed is all done, with a neat rack and pinion door latching mechanism.
And since everyone wants to ask "how do you lock it"? There is no lock. There is no need for a lock.
I used this gear program to design the rack and pinion:

Makes awesomely over-engineered door latch from sophisticated computer programming and intricate craftsmanship.... Throws treated lumber directly on ground for shed floor. You sir are definitely a man. Welcome to the club!

I am a teenager, I think that's one of the best designs for a shed door latch I've seen. Very cool and unique.

The air engine - seems to get teenage boy aroused. That, and any time I insert a "shaft" into a hole seems to do it, especially if I refer to the thing as "my..." like I often do. I'm more careful about how I refer to shafts or nuts now.

Elegant design, thanks for sharing Matthias. I love how clean the doors look for the exterior - you can barely even tell they are doors!

There's no time to spend on haters, if you did, you'd be busy for a long
time and it most likely wouldn't be worth the time. The people who love
watching you will keep coming and keep watching. You're a magnet of
woodworking genius, and you attract both young and old individuals who
either love or appreciate the world of creative woodworking. Thanks for
sharing your knowledge and projects with us!

I've never had any interest in woodwork/carpentry/DIY, yet I find myself truly obsessed with your videos.

Thank god I didn't write it in Java. The motto was "write once, run anywhere". Nowadays, it's "write once, runs nowhere".

Again I watch one of your videos and I catch myself saying "he is a true genius." Good job on the shed

Matthias I always watch your videos and this one is another example of how much of a genius you are to invent all these things to work through trial and error sequence. I will always admire your talent.. Should have been an engineer very talented

Won't the door latch be out of reach for the small gear if you turn it for too long?
And if so, how would you get in the shed?

Ah Canada, where you wouldn't think to put a lock on your shed, because you wouldn't want your shed locked up in case your neighbors found some of your tools outside and decided to put them away for you.

While searching for unique ideas to privatize my backyard I couldn't resist watching all three video's. That was fascinating...way cool latch! :)

I'm a college student and why would anyone make a bad comment about this man, he's a genius. If the apocalypse came you'd be the guy that invents everything all over again

you know ive watched many of your videos and i gotta say i love your approaches to various different problems, the reuse of scrap, the re-purposing of old materials, and the just shear creativity to the solutions to all of those said issues.

like i never would have thought of a rack and pinion system to keep double doors locked .. i would have just done the traditional top and bottom lock on the one door, and standard handle and padlock hasp on the other.

I think the handle should have a part sticking out, wouldnt it be easier to grab and use?

When you mentioned using the rack and pinion barricade bar, I immediately anticipated that you might design some specially shaped removable handle as sort of a medieval inspired oversized key-crank.  Even without the "key" feature to the handle, your doors and the latch look great.  By the way, as an alternative to an angle grinder, and  before I got my power sheet metal shears, I learned another way to cut the sheet metal is to reverse the blade of a circular saw.  A sheet metal worker at Boeing aircraft told me that trick.  The circular saw with the blade reversed allows you to more easily follow a straight edge than with a grinder.  Of course that circular saw blade won't be of much use thereafter except for cutting sheet metal.

Great shed and ingenious latch. I purchased one of your plans a while ago and really enjoy the attention to detail and practicality of your designs. Thank you for the inspiration.

The only thing that could improve this video would be some really dirty comments.
