When I lived near Watertown, NY, I once saw an old retired Navy man verbally take apart a bunch of high schoolers who were bad-mouthing the Coast Guard. He referenced this story and a few other rescues. He claimed that the bravest uniformed men in the US' service weren't in the military but the Coast Guard sailors who rode out on the smallest ships in the US' combined fleet in the worst weather that could send the most hardened Navy man looking for a landside cot. He said that any sailor who had been in jeopardy would tell you that when death was looking for you on those waves, the only words you wanted to hear on the radio were "This is the US Coast Guard coming to assist."

If you liked "The Perfect Storm" you'll love "The Finest Hours." Plain and simple. All through it I kept comparing it to the 2000 classic. Right up to around 90 minutes in I was giving this film an 8.5 out of 10, and the classic a 9.0. After the ending though I had to give "The Finest Hours" a 9.5. since it is hands down the best film ever produced in the maritime disaster genre, and a must see movie no natter what your favorite genre is. Perfect cast, great acting, awesome special effects, and very well-written and directed. Watch it. You won't be disappointed!

The Coast Guard get very little recoginition for the huge work the do all over the world.

These guys are crazy, I can't even watch huge waves too long, makes me nervous. These guys head out into conditions not suitable for any living thing... respect!!
