Classic Olympic highlights as the Soviet Union's Nikolay Zimyatov wins his third cross-country skiing gold medal at the Lake Placid 1980 Winter Olympic Games.

The Lake Placid Games were the Olympic debut of Soviet cross-country skier Nikolay Zimyatov. Aged 24, he had won a silver medal at the World Championships in 1978, but wasn't a clear favourite for a medal two years later.

Still, Zimyatov managed to overcome the competition and win all three cross-country events. He began by taking gold in the 30 kilometre race, which he would defend four years later in Sarajevo. Two days later, he ended in fourth place in the 15 kilometre race and bounced back by taking gold in the 50km race.
