First case of more spreadable mpox detected in UK | BBC News

A single case of mpox - formerly known as monkeypox - linked to the recent outbreak in parts of Africa, has been detected in the UK.

It is part of the Clade 1b outbreak, which appears to spread more easily between people.

Mpox was declared a global health emergency by the World Health Organization in the summer.

The UK patient had recently been on holiday in at least one of the affected countries in Africa and began to feel sick 24 hours after flying home.

The first recorded case of mpox was in 1958, identified in laboratory - monkeys used for research in Copenhagen, Denmark. Stupid people.

It can also mutate to Gorillapox, which, just as the name suggests is a more aggressive form. Best prevention method is to sing Happy Birthday while washing your hands

But how is this new variant transmitted?
It is not seemingly by intimate contact alone as the majority of new cases are in children, so is it by casual touch such as handshakes, sharing items, proximity? Is the illness self-resolving, if people cannot get the vaccine? How available is the vaccine, and who is permitted to get it?

Hope London is more on the ball this time than Boris was back in Jan 2020.
