So funny to read this, I have visited Beaulieu more than once and couldn't believe when I came on a sign saying Gordan Bennet!! I immediately could hear Del Boy saying " Gordon Bennet"! Great to hear the backstory !

Great Story, and story telling Tim, . I don't recall every hearing anything of Gordon Bennett's scandals and the mark he left. Perhaps in America he was considered a best forgotten footnote in history. Having been a balloonist, I sometimes wondered about the origins of all the French traditions attached to ballooning that continue even into today, and no doubt Gorgon Bennett must have left his mark there as well. I very much enjoyed the timeless reflection back in time, and I'm a bit curious what you make of Bennett's opulent decadence, might you find him remarkable and inspiring or shameless?

I have heard a story. Now it could be false that Gordon Bennett was supposed to be on the Titanic but was impatient so took another ship only to be in New York when then passengers on Titanic were brought in.
