Bit of me has been thinking lately: "Oh give them some credit. The old ladies, they know he's only chatting them up and saying he loves them to get their money. They go along with it for the sake of the illusion - he makes them feel attractive and actually pays attention to them, they enjoy feeling like they're desirable instead of just old ladies to be ignored and forgotten."

My mother and I saw this live in Sanjose in the summer of 2004. This was the last musical we saw together before she died.

2:01. The instrumental here is honestly amazing, and it's one of my favorite pieces of music in the film.

This is what I love about Mel Brooks movies. He goes the extra mile with everything. The humor doesn't come from just showing old ladies chasing after a guy. It comes from everyone's utter devotion to the project no matter how absurd.

Shout out too to Glen Kelly, who wrote the musical arrangements.

The move of the ladies falling backwards into each other's arms is an homage to the same famous move in the Radio City Christmas Show where the Rockettes dressed as toy soldiers perform the same move in slow motion...which is also why they're selected to be almost the same height as it would be hard to pull off otherwise.

It took me a long time to understand, if Max could raise two million dollars by screwing old ladies, why he didn't just keep the money from that and not bother putting on a phony play. He wouldn't need to do all of that work and he wouldn't need Leo. But based on the scene at the beginning of the show, it becomes more clear. The IRS would notice the money eventually, and he would have to say where it came from. Without the show, he wouldn't be able to declare where he got it and it would become clear that he was either engaged in prostitution or defrauding his investors by saying they were backing a play that didn't exist. By putting on the show, they had a valid reason to be raising money, and when the show failed, the IRS wouldn't bother looking into their finances because the show wasn't going to make any money. Essentially, Springtime for Hitler was just a smokescreen to throw the IRS off their trail. The scheme wasn't so much about making money as laundering money.

So when Leo asks, "Whom has Max Bialystock harmed?" the answer is the IRS. Because if there's one thing that they'll definitely toss you in jail for, it's not paying your taxes.

I saw this again on television last night and wondered if it would be possible for the quick change on stage. I love the suit. I suppose if you wore one underneath the other, and velcroed or snapped.

For any of the sweet summer children not getting some of the musical magic innuendo here 😅😅😅 every time he took a cheque from elderly lady as they fall down gasping, it’s supposed to represent him going to bed with them and them paying him for it. That’s also why he said he will put his [financial] backers on their backs lmao. He even takes money from another person outside of the line to show him taking a break from the elderly ladies lmaoo
