Republican Rep. Will Hurd of Texas calls President Trump's demands for a $5.7 billion wall the most expensive and least effective solution when it comes to border security. The congressman joined CBSN to discuss working across party lines to reopen the government and help get federal workers paid.

Part of the problem is that border protection is like wack-a-mole. The other side is not forced into any fixed strategy. If you block A then they will do B if you block B they will do C etc. Another part of the problem is that the defense is more expensive than the offence. It costs more to defend a 2000 mile border than it takes to just breach it at one point. For that reason it is important to be extremely flexible and have a strategy that can be changed quickly and cheaply. A wall does not meet these criteria. It is expensive and inflexible. It takes a long time to set up and can not be easily changed. The first step to protecting a border would be to monitor it. My background leads me to think that this should be automated. I don't have the expertise to tell if this monitoring should be done by satellites, drones, balloons, towers, sensor arrays or some combination of these. I also don't have expertise in the types of sensing but perhaps some combination of thermal imaging, motion detection, seismic, radar, sonic, ground penetrating radar, night vision, etc. Some of these techniques can actually monitor both sides of the border. (But don't tell Mexico.) All of this input should be analyzed by AI to minimize false positives and false negatives. After some time further analysis would allow the prediction of breaches and the optimized deployment of response team for interceptions and placement of cheap temporary barriers like movable rolls of Concertina wire. A little game theory could also be applied to keep our opponents confused and maximize the effectiveness of our resources. This is likely to be much cheaper and more effective than a wall. It's also more covert, has fewer environmental problems and won't make us look like jerks. 🇺🇸 🤠

So how much land are we going to give Mexico, in order to build a fence along the Rio Grand you must build it far away from the river.
