50mm 1.2 vs 85mm 1.4 Comparison

Trying to choose between the 50mm 1.2 and 85mm 1.4? In this video I show you guys a comparison of the two using the same settings + shooting in the same spot.

Also, I know these lenses are very expensive...I started photography with kit lenses, then eventually upgraded to the 50mm 1.4. After 8 years of professionally photographing I recently JUST bought the 85mm 1.4 THIS YEAR. I put off buying it because it cost so much money. So don't worry if you can't afford these exact lenses, if you are looking for something a bit more affordable the 50mm 1.4 and the 85mm 1.8 are GREAT alternatives and do NOT disappoint.

THANK YOU AMELIA FOR MODELING

To me, the more important comparison would be both of these lenses with the same composition. Meaning, moving a few steps forward to fill the frame the same way with the 50 as you did with the 85

I think to compare, it needs to be the exact same shot with both lenses...moving forward with the 50mm.

Being that you're staying in the same spot for both lenses wouldn't that give the advantage to the 1st lens that you create the composition with?

I love both lenses but I do like when more of the scenery is showing so I really loved the 50 lens

I love the 50.. I love that extra space it gives. Definitely something I love in my pictures.

I watched this video 3 times and still I liked 85mm 1.4 lens specially because the bokeh are more soft creamy and giving the beautiful contrast to foreground. It's making all 4 photos more captivating 😍📸👌🏼. My favourite is the 1st 📸👌🏼

I'm so glad you posted this! I mainly shoot with a 50mm but I've been debating picking up an 85 and you just convinced me.

Thanks for taking the pictures from the same spot, to see the difference in FoV and DoF while having the same amount of perspective distortion! Most other youtubers change distances to get the same framing, but that doesn't make sense, you can't get the same frame if you change distances, because the perspective changes.

Nice comparison. I also have 50mm f1.2 and 85mm f1.4 IS. I like the rendering and expression of 50mm f1.2, so I'm interested in ef 85mm f1.2L. What do you think about ef 85mm f1.2 vs 85mm f1.4? Which one are you more satisfied with?

Great video. I'm going to have to buy both lens and hire that model for sure :)

cannot explain how weird this was, literally looked up this exact title all but to find one of my favorite YouTubers posted a video about this a few hours ago. Great video!!

Fun video. A more meaningful comparison for me would to frame them similarly then see the difference in the optics of distortion, bokeh, color. I have the 50/1.2 RF now and am thinking about blowing (I mean spending wisely) more money of the 85 RF.

Thank you Jessica for all your videos, I am totally new to the channel but I am already addictive to watching your channel, , , and one more thing your videos made me choose the right lens to see my future so THANK YOU SO MUCH 📷

1- 85mm (no need to say anything)

2- 50mm (it is more balanced with the surroundings and catch the eye interest like hey there are objects with different colors and lighting but keep in mind that all are blurred and the model is our focus)

3- 85mm (as a viewer seeing the background is the same {50mm has more of the tree and wooden fence than 85mm} and no more objects visible also I like how the sun light behind her left arm is closer as it adds more vibrant color to the shadow) BUT I would honestly say that 50mm looks more naturel for the photo of a model in a garden and typically more suitable for the scene, but I choose 85mm cause it makes the photo more aggressive and adds more blurriness to the tree leaves so it does not distract the eye away.

4- 85mm (I like how the blur is affecting the fence and sunlight behind her also the tree to her left more than the 50mm but no blur on tree to her right that gave focus depth in the photo also the 85mm zoomed in nicely fitting for the photo more than 50mm lens given the distance)

Gorgeous model. I don't think there can be a direct comparison or deciding a winner between the two lenses. They just give you different results depending on what you are looking for - each has their merits and serve their purposes.
