Am I the only one that finds it confusing why they'd name the elliptical stylus "Club", when a club DJ spends a lot of time back-cueing which we're told the elliptical stylus is best suited for?

although the explanation is correct, the elliptical orientation shown is not.
The ellipse is oriented perpendicular to the grooves. Take a look under a scope.
