Cryptic Cardiff - A Brief History of The Caerau Hill Fort

In this short video, I take you on a tour of one of Cardiff's most important, yet largely unknown historical sites, the Iron Age Caerau Hill Fort, in Ely.

I has history that spans 5000 years and was once the seat of power for Cardiff. Today it's a pasture but there are still remnants of it's history remaining such as the ruins of the medieval St.Mary's Church.

I was Christened in St Mary's in the late 60's, and used to play in the fort and fields around there as a child. I can recall hearing the bells calling people to worship on a Sunday morn, and then seeing the congregation walking up the lane to the church. So sad to see it in it's current state after vandalism in the late 70's early 80's, as it was a lovely building both inside and out.

I went as a child and the people I went with were running in a circle in and out of that bricked up tower it was a tiny tunnel you had to bend down it had an arched ceiling same shape as the arched doorway , it looked too small and I got really scared I would get stuck, I didn't scare easy as a child but I just couldn't bring myself to go through, I always regretted it afterwards

I remember going in the tower with my dad in the early 90's. Unfortunately the vandals ruined the place. The arch that was bricked up in your video was done cos people were doing drugs in the tower, plus there were safety concerns.

I think the door was bricked up so they could pour the concrete i to the tower without it going everywhere
