EXV Takes Out Chiller on Trane Air Cooled Chiller

Air cooled chiller is having issues with circuit 1 exv tripping on alarm. Trane chillers are pretty nice to work on given all the service tests they give you access to. I do fully explain the troubleshooting process for a exv or eev as some hvac technician call them. @EngineeringMindset has a great video on stepper motors and exv operations and design.

I think you just answered all the questions ive had the last two days while working on a very similar but older train chiller . Blue screen if you know what i mean.... High super heat low subcool degree day tripping off on low refer temp code- 195/194 when its cooler 65-75ish out . 75 and up its seems to run both stages without tripping. Noticed the EXV is loud the whole cycle up and down. Exv frost up a lot, flashing sight glass Pulled out 80lb from one circuit. Going to really listen to it tomorrow

I’m just now getting into chiller training. I have 27 years in residential and I want something different and new and exciting. This is exactly what I was looking for. Heavy commercial as you call it.
My question is, what was the difference between manual activation of the expansion valve versus communicated Call for expansion valve? You put it through a manual open and close and it worked. Did you again then try to operate the system and it was still giving you a code which was false?

it’s cool to see what the original controls look like on those chillers. I got one of these chillers sitting on a trailer in my parking lot, and the vendor completely ripped out the trane controls and reworked it from scratch with Delta. They can even access it remotely! That’s the way to work: from a laptop on your couch. lol

start of video, standing in front of large breakers/disconnects and flipping them, very bad! always stand off to the side and one hand trip them.
you just never know when something will fail or short and cause a major panel blow off crippling you. \
I have zapped myself umpteen times on 120vac, seen/felt firsthand 480vac phase to phase short and way more than I'd like to witness very high voltage distribution line faults.
