Andreas Mavroyiannis, Greek Cypriot Negotiator for the Cyprus Problem and Former Deputy Minister for European Affairs, regarding the current and future negotiating dynamics to reunify Cyprus. 2014 marks the 40th anniversary of the division of Cyprus. Following numerous failed attempts to resolve the Cyprus Problem, a devastating financial crisis, and political turmoil in Ankara, Greek and Turkish Cypriot leaders have returned to the bargaining table to discuss reunification. What factors have led to the recent signing of the February Joint Declaration? A potential supply of offshore natural gas in the Eastern Mediterranean? Political uncertainty in the neighborhood? How will these developments impact each side's bargaining position? Has the prospect for a negotiated settlement improved? What can the UN, U.S., UK, EU, and other actors do to help encourage a solution and facilitate confidence building measures between the parties? Mr. Mavroyiannis will offer his reflections on the lead-up to the joint declaration and outline the negotiation road ahead in a lively, public discussion.
