Kaworu Nagisa Explained [NG Evangelion Lore]

Video analysis of Kaworu Nagisa for my Evangelion Explained Series. Kaworu also known as Tabris, is both the 17th Angel and the Fifth Children of Neon Genesis Evangelion. Although classified as an Angel, Kaworu is similar to Rei Ayanami in being a Seed of Life inhabiting a human body. Despite his human form, Kaworu evidently does not consider himself to be human, as he refers to humans as "the Lilin."

Though his feature in the TV series was brief, lasting only one episode (Episode 24), his appearance made a disproportional impact on Evangelion fans, prompting his return in Evangelion: Death and Rebirth and End of Evangelion, an increased, though still smaller importance in spin-off media, manga and video games, and an expanded role in the Rebuild of Evangelion series.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is a Japanese mecha anime television series produced by Gainax and Tatsunoko Production, directed by Hideaki Anno and broadcast on TV Tokyo from October 1995 to March 1996.

Evangelion is set fifteen years after a worldwide cataclysm, particularly in the futuristic fortified city of Tokyo-3. The protagonist is Shinji, a teenage boy who was recruited by his father Gendo to the shadowy organization Nerv to pilot a giant bio-machine called an "Evangelion" into combat with alien beings called "Angels". The series explores the experiences and emotions of Evangelion pilots and members of Nerv as they try to prevent Angels from causing more cataclysms. In the process, they are called upon to understand the ultimate causes of events and the motives for human action. It recast the saintly inventor/father as a sinister figure, and the enthusiastic teenage protagonist as a vacillating introvert, a deconstruction of classic anime tropes. The series features archetypal imagery derived from Shinto cosmology as well as Jewish and Christian mystical traditions, including Midrashic tales, Kabbalah and Gnosticism. The psychoanalytic theories of Freud and Jung also feature prominently.

25 and 26 were not replaced. They WERE the mental breakdown, and what happened while he was in the orange Ocean

also worth noting that when it comes to kaworu being the most open and accepting person in the show who actually communicates with shinji that he is also suppressing his AT Field the entire time (ie, the barrier that separates individuals)

I just got into Neon Genesis Evangeleon. One of my most anticipated characters I wanted to see was Kaworu. By the time I got done watching episode 22 I got worried and wondered when the heck he was gonna be in the show. Then I get to the episode he finally shows himself and then he dies in that same episode. I’m just left flabbergasted because I had no idea he was in the show for just about 15min total. At least I’ll get to see more of him in the Neon Genesis movies from what I understand. Still got to finish up watching End of Evangelion

All the main characters ARE also Shinji, they are all fragments of his personality, his desires, fears, rage, resentment, hope, despair, loneliness, shame, apathy, and insecurities.

Thank you so much for this video!! I just finished the first season (the original 26 episodes) and fell in love with his character and how he represented some light in such a dreary world in NGEvangelion.

About loneliness- idk how much of a theory it is, but looking at the Angels they show their loneliness even with their designs. Non of them is the same, neither in shape, nor size. The only "not lonely" angel was the one that could split itself into two, but even then- what is an interaction if it's basically with a mirror of yourself?
I know the Angels supposed to be feared, either from their intentions, their size, the fact that if any of them touches Lillith then they will be the "brain" of human change into "god", but after looking at it through Kaworu you can look at them as extremaly lonely beings

There some lines in the rebuild movies, that's shows is more to him, I think that is the same Kaworu of the manga, linking the 3 timelines manga, classical and Rebuild. That's why I don't discard the Rebuild, because when discarded, the Rebuild Kaworu doesn't make sense. I don't think EoE discards ep25/26, since Eva is all about interpretation, you could say is the 3rd Impact and instrumentality project, occurring in 2 different perspectives internal and external. Or one being the good ending and the other bad. Playing with the all Quantum Theory
(Quantum experiment in space confirms that reality is what you make it. An odd space experiment has confirmed that, as quantum mechanics says, reality is what you choose it to be. Physicists have long known that a quantum of light, or photon, will behave like a particle or a wave depending on how they measure it.) the fate of mankind was determined by Shinji. Some games, like Persona and Smt has multiple endings, making hard to say, what is the canonical ending, or all of them are. But then, we would be entering in the multiple timelines and parallel universes theory, in Eva those make sense.

I feel the ambiguous relationship of Kaworu and Shinji is like that intentionally, making his death even more painful, as Shinji is left with the potential future they could have had together, a "What if?" that will never be answered. To say it's purely platonic or romantic feels wrong to me. Additionally, that extra layer of, for lack of a better word, 'gayness' follows very well thematically with Shinji's psyche, as he is constantly told to 'Be a man', so having someone he can let his guard down and be more sensitive around would have been ideal for him.

(I think the ship is cute tho)

The Final Angel Tabris, the one who inherited free will, the hottest anime character to ever exist (Straight man saying this) and the character who put so much emotional weight in the series it’s insane.

He is Adam aka the first man... Lilith is also an angel, and hence why we have Eva's aka Eve i.e. Created from Adams rib hence why kaworu make that comment about Lilin ( the off spring of Lilith i.e. Humans) using Adam's technology to bring about their own evolution... it's pretty straight forward if you've read the Bible....
