Gonna have to try this. Sadly, I'm a more experienced photographer but I don't print often and after I got back from a trip to Colorado, I had about five images I wanted to print. When I got them back from the lab, I was underwhelmed. The prints overall were, like you said, about a stop darker than I edited them and the shadows were muddy and milky looking. I was thinking I was going to have to ask what the lab's printers they have so I can find a profile online to calibrate it to. I also forget that iMacs have suuuuper rich color and contrast compared to other monitors so I need to pay more attention to the histogram and tone curve going forward. But I'll try this first. Good info here

Thank you for the feedback. I appreciate it. I’ve always had my prints turn out too dark. I just thought it was that the print shops couldn’t print bright enough. I’m going to try your recommendation. Thanks again, Macario

Looking forward to trying this out. I just spent ages looking for the answer online, don't really want to fork out money for a calibration tool just need something near enough for now.

Good tip. What about the ambient light in the editing room?

Matt - great tip. When calibrating, I set my monitor to 80-85 nits. I still will bump the brightness of the file by 10 or so in PS before printing.

Learned this the hard way, after spending quite a bit of money printing/shipping a large print. Also the need for color calibration, too. LOL.That'll frustrate you even more.

If you're truly serious about printing, you should calibrate your screen and use proper color management throughout your editing process. Otherwise, you're just approximating
