That is an SM420 4spd, the large gear slid to the back is 1st, slide it forward engaging the two pinned collar and it is in 2nd, the forward sliding shift collar is 3rd and 4th. Reverse is achieved by neutraling all the main shaft gears and sliding the reverse idler and engaging the 1st main shaft gear. If it has a mainshaft gear stuck to the main shaft it will be stuck in a forward gear, if someone towed it with the drive shaft in itnstalled it could seize a main shaft gear to the shaft. Wow the Portland swap meet, that is a haul for you, only 2.5 hours for me, it used to be huge, spent many a day wandering around there in the pouring down rain. When the rain is coming down you can find some deals from folks wanting to find a dry spot to be. I was down there one season while it was pouring buckets and ran into a couple of gals huddling under a piece of plastic. I asked them where their husbands were at, they pointed to the pavilion getting a beer, I asked what they wanted for the heads, she said just make me an offer and they are yours. The moral of the story is don't leave your wife out in a rain storm watching your swap meet booth getting soaked.

The water comes from condensation. As the air temperature goes up and down during the day the water sweats out on the insides of the engine and collects in the oil pan. I had a gallon of water in the transmission of an old truck I bought a while back.
