California’s megadrought has revealed a WWII ‘ghost boat’ in Lake Shasta — leading to confusion about how the decades-old military boat would’ve ended up in the lake in the first place.

Shasta-Trinity National Forest posted online on Oct 9 about the recently discovered boat, which was used on USS Monrovia in the Atlantic and Pacific campaigns during WWII, sparking widespread speculation about its backstory.

On Oct 13, a piece published in SF Gate offered a likely theory. In the 1960s, the Monrovia was decommissioned, and it’s likely the U.S. Forest Service snapped up some of the military's spare boats ‘to make the lake clear and safe for summer vacationers’ by cleaning up ‘floating logs, railroad ties, fence posts and other flotsam.’

It’s no mystery. During WW2 hoover dam was thought to be a target for German or Japanese agents, so the US Army had the job of defending it.
Access to the dam wall was banned, guard posts and bunkers built. These Higgins boats were used to ferry men and equipment between guard positions on the shores of the lake.

Water diversion project of the '80s has been severely covered up. Our history has been erased
