Kenpo Karate: Law of the Fist and The Empty Hand

EPAKS Kenpo Solidarity Crest

Part 1: The Origin of American Kenpo

Part 2: The Evolution of American Kenpo

In this video we talk about the most iconic symbol in American Kenpo...the IKKA (International Kenpo Karate Association) Crest, or more commonly known as the Kenpo Crest.

With a rich history, deep with symbolism and embedded with the philosophies that Ed Parker infused into his art, this Crest has become immortalized in the Kenpo culture, and serves as the base of many new existing crests today.

Special thanks to Jeff Speakman, Sean Kelly, Alex Perez, Benn Cohen, and Anto Parseghian for their participation in the video.

I really enjoy your videos. I just earned my first black belt in Kenpo this past June at the young age of 50. Looking forward to learning as much as I can and you're videos certainly help.

Thanks for those video. I learn a lot. I'm a black belt of Shōrin-ryū style but I'm switching to Kenpo. I'm not from US but Canada. So we are under Nick Cerio which now I know he was a student of Ed Parker. I will continue to watch your video, continue to do so. Thanks

I have seen a lot of your videos and while I am not a student of kenpo, I find myself super into the videos you post. Always informative. This is one of the best ones yet. Thank you for taking the time to educate others. You have inspired me to do the same for my art. A humble bow to you sir.

Every time I watch this video, I feel the emotions that everyone was holding back. You can still tell they mourn Mr. Parker even after all these years.

When I saw that you had a video about PATCHES, I was ready to skip it!
But I am SO glad I didn't!
There is such amazing martial arts history here!

Interesting and informative. Thank you! Because I am traditionally trained, these things have significance to me. I have the original Tracy's patch on my dress gi. It is yellow and has a green and red dragon over a black "T" with Tracy's in red on the bottom. My instructor used to joke that it looked like a dollar sign $ lol We had a good time, but don't misunderstand, when it came to practicing the art, we were very serious, and our studio dominated local competitions.

Awesome series a frequent reminder of why I always had an initial interest in Kenpo.

Wow I am impressed and also intrigued by the various Kenpo Karate patches, as well as their historical and philosophical meanings. Thank you for going into articulate, concise, clear and comprehensible, explanation of what each aspect of the various Kenpo Karate crests mean, represent and symbolise!

I truly enjoyed the thorough detailed chronology, of Kenpo Karate, over the three detailed videos, that you have showcased, here on your YouTube channel Sensei Dan!

I am looking forward to your next martial arts coverage, of which no doubt I am certain will be, of the utmost excellence and educational. I hope your week has been going well thus far. Wishing you the very best as usual. From Melbourne, Australia 🇦🇺, Osu! 👍 ☺ ✌

Awesome video! Thank you for taking the time to produce this beautiful work and to educate! Those of us within Kenpo need to learn, too.

Fantastic video... again! This was very informative about the background and reasoning for the crest. While I like the comment about kenpo being in the heart, I think it lends itself to too many people claiming cultish garbage. Personally I think anything that you are passionate about will be in your heart. While this information will not make me a better fighter, it does give me more insight into the intentions and thought processes of the creator of it.

I remember when Ed Parker started the IKKA, back in 1966-67 when I lived in LA and fought on Chris Armstrong's Karate team. We were aligned with the IKKA and I remember when Ed introduced the new patch...

Nice job yet again sir. Im a Second-Degree Black belt in American Kenpo under Grandmaster Dennis Tosten; not sure if your familiar but his was the 1st Kenpo school in Philadelphia going back to 1967 which later became know as Amerikick Kenpo Karate. He was pronoted to incredibly high rank of 7th degree and trained and traveled with SGM Parker until his passing and also attended the funeral. He also studied under the Tracys and Joe Palanzo. I would love to share our patch with you but unfortunately we cannot upload pictures in the comnent section of YouTube. Only Facebook. Thanjs again for anotger great video.

Awesome video! In that bygone era known as "The 1980s", I studied Kenpo for almost two years, achieving the rank of Advanced Purple Belt. This video brought back so many memories: meeting Ed Parker and Michael Pick, tournaments, hours in the dojo, sparring classes, etc. Thirty-one years later, I still have my original Kenpo Gi, wonderfully faded with the original crest and associated patches.
Oddly enough, not being allowed to wear it amidst the ensuing politics following Mr. Parker's passing was one of the primary reasons I held off on returning to Kenpo. These extremely well-made videos of yours has me considering to do so one day and for that I thank you.
Question: Where can I find the Tiger & Dragon artwork displayed at 1:40? I loved the detail in it. Thanks again!
