What It Takes to Be the World’s Fastest Marathon Runner

Kenenisa Bekele is one of the world’s fastest marathon runners. He runs 26.2 miles in half the time it takes the average runner. Every year, the world’s top long-distance runners compete in the Berlin Marathon in a bid to break the world record (of two hours, two minutes, 57 seconds). Berlin’s generally flat course means that runners are more likely to break the record there than at most other marathons. And last year, Bekele came up just six seconds short of the record. Now, in an effort to achieve his ultimate goal, Bekele is training twice a day while exploring the limits of human potential and pushing his body to places few will ever know.
