CHEVY MALIBU INTERMITTENT NO CRANK NO START P0615 DIAGNOSIS & FIX

In today's video we take a look at a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu with a 2.4l 4 cylinder engine. The customer complaint is that the car intermittently does not crank or start. After the owner lets the car cool down, she can restart it. Using a scan tool we find the trouble code P0615 stored in the ECM. This code is described as a starter relay control circuit failure code. The symptoms this car has and the trouble code remind me of a car I worked on previously with the same symptoms. That car turned out to have a faulty fuse box. Could this car have the same problem? Follow along as I show you how to diagnose and test this condition!

You're a great diagnostician, Eric, but you're an even greater person. God bless you, Eric.

Love the explanation and detail with the wiring diagram. That stuff right there is gold for DIY's like myself.

You have saved me hundreds if not thousands of dollars and valuable family time that I would have spent replacing damn near every part on my truck until I came across your video and the fuse box issue and it put me in the right direction in fixing my issue. Thank you very much!

I’m so glad I came across this video after the car was in the shop for about a week and a half and they could not figure out what was wrong with it. My sons car is a 2012 Chevy Malibu and the mechanics could not figure out what was wrong with it. It was the same issue. No crank no start but you could jump it to get it to start. We ended up purchasing a new fuse box, direct from the Chevy parts dealer in town. When we took it in for service to Chevy, they did find the exact same code, but they said that the fuse box was on national back order. We were able to go directly to the parts department and pick it up the next day. The parts guy had it brought in from Arizona within the day we picked it up and took it to the service writer. He was stunned that we were even able to get this part. I guess service dept and parts dept do not talk to each other at that location. So if you take your car in and the service writer tells you a part is on national back order. Just call the parts department on your own and do your own research. The part was almost $500 and it was just around $200 for them to install it. We took the old fuse box apart and found the fractured copper wiring. Thank you so much for this video.

I applied what you taught me on a pin-drag test for a Silverado ABS problem, similar year to yours. It cost me 0, abs is back in business. It's a similar story as to the fuse box issue. Thanks a million.

You should have your own shop.. you are worth the dealership price. Nothing worse then going to the dealership, who you think should know how to fix issues like this, paying high price diagnostic only for them to give you a dumb response, hold your car for weeks then end up having to return it for them to charge you more money. You a real hero... you should post a wallet tag so people can donate money to you... not cause your doing it for money but cause people like me really want to show you how much we appreciate you.. im literally writing this while sitting in my 10' malibu that WONT crank and furstrated of why I cant solve this issue... then I come to you tube and my hero (you) save me with knowledge.. appreciate you .. 🙏 YOUR FAMILY SHOULD BE PROUD... YOU REALLY ARE A HERO

This is amazing. Back in the 90s I used to own Ford Tempo that had similar issue. After engine heated up it shut down. It was intermittent issue. Mechanics couldn’t figure out what the issue was. It became process of blind part replacement that costed money. Now, that I see this video it was eye opening how it is truly easy to misdiagnose the issue. Thank you Eric for sharing all these valuable information. 👍

Hello, thank for the video, I work for my self and you just saved me who knows how many hours in diagnostic, FYI I pulled the box and separated it and my separation was on the first turn

You are very good at this. I can see most of things you do is electrical work and flood cars. Most mechanics don't want to bother with electrical stuff, but you do. It just shows how competent you have become over the years. you inspired me to learn wiring diagrams after Tundra Fuel pump video. Thank you, awesome content.

Wow! Thanks a lot. I already wasted $230.00 for ignition switch replacement and just ordered a starter ($70.00). I looking for where the starter was located and how to replace although I didn’t think it was the starter. Then I came across your video and I’m so glad I did. After watching your video, I realized that every time my car would not start was after sitting in the hot sun all day or after a long drive on a very hot day. Now I am going to try the heat gun test before I change anymore parts. Thanks a lot.

You SMA and Ivan are the ones who "fix" the problem. Great tech tip with the heat gun! I've used mine in the past to locate a problem. Another way to temporarily repair it would be to run an external wire from the relay socket to the wire going to ground. Not the best way to repair it, but better than having an intermittent problem until a new box is available.

My wife Malibu is literally doing this right now and stuck at my job. My mechanic and I are really trying to figure this thing out. I'm going to show him this video cuz this video magically showed up in my feed. These phones really be listening hint hint 👍

impressed that you found time to not only read but also answer my comment . I didn't think of the wire under the relay pin because i'd be worried about over flexing the female connector in the fuse box but if you were going to replace the fuse box or for a road side emergency I could see it.But it would suck if decided to solder it and it didn't work right because of a lose pin fitment problem. Great work I regularly watch south main auto and fordtechmakuloc because of their knowledge and thought processand I'm going to add you to that list. THUMBS UP EMOJI

I don’t even have a Malibu, yet I watched all 30 minutes of it. Oddly therapeutic. LoL Great Job bro. Hopefully customers don’t try to low ball you because of your knowledge.
