The Poly Studio P5 webcam has one huge problem

The Poly Studio P5 webcam is nicely designed. But it has one huge problem. And several smaller ones. This video is my first impressions of the Poly Studio P5.

If you download the Poly Upgrading software you can adjust quite a lot on this. I will disagree with the first bad comment. As soon as the lens cover is clicked to try to shut it, The camera disconnects the picture. To be honest the shutter is just for looks and your piece of mind.

The lens will only "open" when the shutter ring is locked in the open position. That's where the switch/connector sits. Even though the shutter is almost fully open, it will not work until the ring is locked in place.

I had a sample unit and its mic had worked really well. it didn't sound anything like your example. So I ordered 10 of these. However, 7 of the 10 either mic didn't work, either tapping the unit could be hear, or the mic would barely hear us. i reached out to poly for support and it was really painful and still haven't gotten any replacements. bad

Can you use this with poly 40plus? Not sure how you would pair the p15, p40 and a laptop. Be interesting to see a review of the pair 😊

Wish I had learned of the poor mic quality before purchasing. On my unit, the mic doesn't work at all. You mention the shutter not locking. I didn't see this as a problem - as from my testing, as soon as you turn the iris type shutter, the camera electronically switches off. That's what happens for me. and of course the RED light comes on. I bought this because the camera and microphone were bad on the Lenova T480s laptop. I can't see how organizations are able to sell laptops as a workhorse, when it functions poorly on a video conference. However, this Poly Studio P5 does have an excellent camera for it's price. Thanks for the review.

Video pulsates and is really annoying. Nothing in the settings or resetting to factory seems to help. Any ideas?

I will add this to your "review", after testing the webcam myself IRL:

The lens-cover mechanism: (the turning ring, blocking the image):
- it is "Loose" (dust will enter, in some time - ruining the image).
- the "ON" setting, during the turn of the ring "is very short" - so, if by accident one touches the ring, it can/will turn off the image.
- "friction" is non-existing - the ring can be turned without any force! and shakes will be able to "turn off" the image!
- all making it completely useless for streaming-conferencing-etc.

The mount:
- it has NO adjustments up/downwards, and sideways (the angle).
- one can only "turn" the camere around (the market-hyped "360-degrees").
- it has to be angled by loosening/tightning the mount (and this is "limited", because of the small front-footprint of the mount).

The Image - in low-light:
- it is very noisy. Actually more than a standard chinese webcam costing 30euro!
- it doesn't at all live up to the reviews. Indicating, that the reviews are false / paid / cheating!

The Software:
- are buggy, are bed designed - and looks like a "beta/test version", here in march-2022, appr. 1½ years after release!
- the zooming-etc only works sometimes!
- the "basic setting-parameters" aren't functioning correctly: For instance, contrast adjustment works like a strange combination of (and is therefore UNUSABLE).

Overall:
- this webcam is not worth more than appr. 30-euro. In terms of picture-quality.
- the extra usb-connection inside, is a plus - but, a usb-3 hub can add usb-ports much better and simpler (without breaking a plastic-piece of a much too expensive webcam!!).

I've had this for about three years. Very flaky software. I've had to reinstall the software many times due to crashes. And now my microphone has the same problem. Lousy product. Avoid.
