2023 Hellcat with 800 miles Grenades! Warranty Denied.. 36k in Repairs

I react to a recent article put out by Carscoops in which the owner of a 2023 Hellcat Jailbreak states that his engine with only 800 miles on it is defective and Dodge refuses to pay for the replacement costs totaling more than 36k. Dodge claims the vehicles emissions system has been tampered with and this voided his factory warranty. Who do you think is right here?

Here is the article referenced in the video:

His own pictures show that it wasn't denied for the MMD. He tuned it, blew it up, & then put the stock tune back in. It wasn't defective...

I'm a technician for Dodge going on 31 years now. I've never seen any repair denied for a muffler delete. If you tune it, that will void your warranty. For a claim, we have to do digital imaging of the eng damage. We also have to do a scan report on every computer on the car. We send that in and they decide if they will cover it. If you want to play you gotta pay.

Always been told if you have the money to modify, then you have the money for repairs.

These cars already have more power than you could ever dream of, and they make awesome music too! If it works, don't screw with it! Enjoy it as it is!

There is always more to the story... 800 miles and just couldn't wait to mess with the engine, he learned a valuable lesson.

I worked as a technician a Chrysler dealer for 20 years, the stock tunes are set up a little bit on the rich side to help protect the engines. It is very easy to tell if a tune has been installed and it voids the warranty. I also worked at a Ford dealer for 10 years and I saw this situation many times. Almost every time the customer lied about it. One of the funny ones a customer had a SVT Cobra Mustang and driving down the road it would just cut out and come back. Customer was asked if he modded the vehicle and said no. I removed the PCM and it had a Superchips sticker on the back of the PCM 🤣. I`ve never seen a warranty denied for an exhaust mod, but mostly for neglecting service and PCM / engine mods. Even then you can a lot of the time get the DSM to cover stuff, what makes it worse for everybody is when the customer lies, it just waste everyones time.

READ THE MANUAL AND LIVE BY THE WARRANTY INFORMATION. If you are told not to Tune the Car, Don’t do it. Break In Periods are there for obvious reasons!!! Yes, we like Immediate Gratification and Can’t Wait, but the consequences are too steep for violators!!!

My 2020 Charger Scatpack engine just blew, connecting Rods cylinder 5 & 6 and during the warranty process they checked for a tune and took pictures of the exhaust. Luckily mine was stock but they were definitely looking for any way not to cover the repair. FYI new 6.4 liter was going to cost 15K.

By bet is tuner did an overly aggressive timing curve for pump gas and the engine has a hole in that piston. If that's the case, a good tech could tear it down, replace the burned piston for way less than what is being discussed. If the engine was truly "grenaded", they wouldn't even have compression numbers.

Feel safer on the road already knowing this guy is not driving around in this car

Imagine buying an 800hp car and being like nope, too slow. I’ll just sit over here with my stock RT Plus lol.

I had a P.O.S. 2016 Challenger HellCat. All within 16k miles I went through 2 motors and a supercharger. Dodge inspected engine and said it wasn’t anything I did, there’s been some internal oiling issues with the 6.2L. I actually babied the car while owning it smashing the pedal a few times. I really wanted to keep the car as a gift to myself after starting my own business and surviving 25 yrs (saying I’ve made it in life). That 2nd engine went out during break in period with about 250 miles on it. Chrysler denied me a 3rd motor saying the next one is on me ($30k) car was still under 3yr/36k warranty!! I went rounds and rounds with them finally giving up and traded car in on a beautiful 5.0 Mustang Gt Performance Pack 2.

Sounds like to me the owner was playing around and pushed to much and tried to hide it to get it fixed

Dude needs to own up to his mistakes... Plain and Simple, you tune the car and it gives out, let alone he didnt give it a good break in service

They will do anything to void your warranty. I would only add Direct Connection upgrades installed by the dealer to avoid dealing with this kind of nightmare 😮

One of my first jobs as a tech was at a Ford dealer in the 1990's. Pulled the heads of a mustang gt and to my surprise the pistons had melted in a few spots. It was not warranty. Few other techs come over look at the pistons started laughing said yeah that's what nitrous will do. So yeah these guys know what happens because they see it all the time. If not the guy working on it, I'm sure the engineers at techline do. I guarantee they had engineers involved from techline to make the call.

It's amazing they can tell if your PCM has been unlocked but can't figure out a way to keep the keys from being cloned by thieves...

The manufacturer warranties their cars as they build them. Expecting them to cover a grenaded engine that has been modded is like asking a roofer to cover leaks that were caused by you adding skylights afterwards.
