This is funny.  A few decades ago, this was the only type of bike you could get.  One speed bike.  We moved to multiple speeds to make it easy to ride different terrain.  Now, we are going back to one speed and no stopping pedaling?  It is just a fashion thing.  If you live in a flat city and you are just off you teen years, then you might find going back to beginning of last century bikes okay.  I wanted gears since I bought my first "fixie" in 1978 and converted it to 5 speed bike.

I had the same question as a lot of people "WHY" so to answer the question I made a fixie bike, and i love it.
I think people like riding fixies for different reasons. some like them for the simplicity others for the style or the tricks you can do on them. I like ridding mine because of the quirkiness and very low maintenance. so if you want to know "WHY" then ride one, you never know you might like it.

Sounds like a bunch of activities that don't go together with touring and commuting, especially over longer distances. Which again brings us to the original purpose of the fixie: it's designed for trick riding and racing and such, not for basic travel. Unless you live in a flat area with no wind, or you're a masochist.
