In this video, I tell you about some reasons why your car might have bad fuel economy. When it comes to gas consumption, bad fuel economy means that you'll end up wasting more money at the gas pump and going there more often. With that being said, I go over some of the most common things that would cause a car to have a decreased fuel economy, and hopefully you can use this information to get to the bottom of it and improve the gas mileage on your car.

Engines actually run better and get better mpg in cold weather than hot weather. In hot weather you constantly have the AC running and your engine is hotter and heat breaks down everything. In cold weather your engine is staying cooler and you're running the heater, which doesn't consume more gas, like the AC does. Plus you have your windows rolled up.

0:59 no, the AC doesn’t use gas, it puts strain on the engine, which uses more gas. And heaters do NOT use electricity. They use the natural heat of an internal combustion engine.

My 2004 BMW 325i only got 15 MPG since I bought it 5 years ago.
I cleaned the MASS AIRFLOW SENSOR and I'm getting around 30+ now!!!
(It never threw a fault code for anything. Including Oxygen Sensors.)

You forgot to mention dirty air filter and fuel filter if a car has a replaceable fuel filter LOL your video is good I am a car guy and PCV valve and a lazy Oxygen sensor can cause it to be bad as well

I love your videos. Just as much as Scotty Kilmer. You both are very knowledgeable about this kind of stuff and your personality is welcoming.

From my own personal experience, I can tell you what commonly causes fuel economy to suddenly cut down to half or less (example being, you've always gotten 30 mpg, and now it suddenly drops to 13). That's usually a warning sign that a connecting rod bearing in the engine is getting starting to go bad, and the connecting rod will turn loose from the crankshaft will blow out through the block within several months to a year from now.
I had a 1974 Ford Econoline van I got when it was brand new. It had a 240 cubic inch inline 6 cylinder motor, three speed manual transmission, manual steering, manual brakes, and it was not equipped with A/C.
When the van was new, it got 19 mpg. However, sometime in 1980, the fuel economy suddenly dropped from 19 mpg to about 8 mpg. Later that year, I gave the van to my cousin Witt in Florida. Not long after I gave him the van, his sister (my cousin Linda) and her boyfriend took the van to head out to California without Witt's permission. They got as far as Colorado and a connecting rod blew loose through the engine block.
In 1997, I bought a 1984 Oldsmobile Omega from a lady for $200. She had the car for her teenage son to use, though it was still in her name. Her teenage son ran up astronomically high long distance phone bills he couldn't pay (these were the days of landline phones), so she put the car up for sale to recoup those expenses. It was a great little car the first year I had it. Then a year after I bought it, the fuel economy suddenly went from 26 mpg down to 11 mpg. Like in the case with the 1974 Ford van, the Oldsmobile still ran great, otherwise it would gulp down gas like there was no tomorrow.
Well, sure enough...About 8 months after the gas mileage went from sugar to shit, I was driving it and I heard this loud clattering sound coming from the motor. When stopped and let it idle, the motor made a loud >clack clack clack clack clack< sound. I drove it for a week with the clacking connecting rod bearing before the connecting rod finally blew. I was getting ready to leave the house to go somewhere, and when I started the car was when the connecting rod blew.

Well a reason why the car gets bad fuel economy is because the car itself is just not fuel efficient.

Does putting more air in the tires use more gas? How?
