Use the techniques shown in this video to both select and manipulate samples for enhanced realism and believability when programming MIDI drum beats. Realistic does not mean acoustic! What do you think about these long-form videos?
I tend to prefer going very in-depth on topics rather than just skimming the surface, but if you would prefer shorter, less detailed videos, please let me know!

It's crazy how you only have 2k subscribers, these videos are so informative and well done, you're my go to guy for learning music production on Studio One thanks

Max, just need to write: you are a very sympathic teacher and in my opinion totally underrated with subscribers etc... That' s a shame. Best wishes from Bavaria, TheBassPapa

for someone who doesn't use drums that much in tracks this was really informative for me and didn't know how much I needed it until I watched it. thanks Max

You might want to check out XO by XLN. It's a visual map that categorizes samples by timbre. So if you have a specific tone in mind, you just drag your mouse through the constellation of sample represented dots and can find what you need quickly. You can also filter by things like "snare, kick, etc." it's really revolutionary.

Your amatuer drum beat is literally almost exactly what I made for my first beat just figuring things out lmfao. Memories. :)

Such a high quality video! 38 minutes went by in a flash! I'm gonna watch the second part as well, but I've already learned so much with this first episode. As some who's struggling to come up with interesting drum patterns/sounds, thank you for all your hard work on this!

For what is worth I've seen hundreds of tutorials, from the best in the business; this is an excellent one. Detailed, with examples, explaining the reasons behind the process. Keep up the good work, you got a new subscriber.

Just finished the video. Wow. What a fantastic class in 38 minutes. Learned so much and will be applying this for the rest of my producing career! Thank you.

The idea of considering the story you're telling is probably the best piece of general advice in terms of sample and instrument selection. Also I've found using the velocity sensitive filter is a great way of inducing subtle variety if using Impact XT (lower velocity = more high cut).

the noise you made for going through samples is to accurate lol

Your drums always sound top notch so I'll look forward to watching this tomorrow. You mentioned the importance of sample selection recently and this proves your point. Thanks Max.

I stumbled on your 2nd video...but watching this one as you suggested, 😎
would you be able to cover beats @ higher tempo's like drum n bass??
that would be EPIC!!!!
Thanks for taking the time out to share your knowledge, really appreciate it.
Also...where i find i get stuck is TUNING Kicks snares etc, if there is an easy process or any
suggestions.
Thanks.

Love from the UK 💙👊🏾

Hi Max! As usual an eye-opener to watch your videos. In Battery there are options to route the samples to different outputs. I've only discovered the way when you have to rightclick on every sample and assign them to st1/2, st3/4 and so on. Do you know if there's an automated way to do it, similar to the routing Kontakt provides?
