_______________ It's Just a Double Stroke Roll. (Drum Speed Hack)

When we're practicing the drums, it can sometimes be the smallest things that make a difference. This is especially true for the drum rudiments. For years I could play my double stroke roll at one tempo and my swiss army triplets at another. Nowhere close to drumming as fast with each of those.

This one little discovery (some of you may just be rolling your eyes and being like "Stephen, that's SO obvious") over doubled my drumming speed with my swiss army triplets. It was a simple mental shift. Oftentimes it's just a little mental shift that is needed for you to have a breakthrough with your drum rudiments, in your drumming practice time, or when drumming to a song.

NOTE: My apologies for the vocal audio. The mic was at a weird angle and I didn't realize it. I've got a new mic on order so it will improve a ton very soon.

My favourite rudiment is hitting the drum with the stick at about the right time ish. Keep up the good work.

Paradiddles are my favorite. I had a difficult time getting them and once I did I found them fun to play. Now I like to try paradiddles around the kit.

Something that helped me a little more when learning some flam rudiments was taking the flam out. So for Swiss Armys, the sticking is R R L which is an inverted puhguhduh ( R L L ). But recognizing that Swiss Armys are smushed doubles also helped me just now in increasing the speed of them

Oddly enough, my favorite is the Swiss army. You're absolutely right; once I figured out how it works as a "dirty roll" it became so much easier, and fun to play.

Great lesson. I once saw Claus Hessler doing a lesson on Drumeo about this concept. He calls it "Collapsed Rudiments" Great stuff to check out :-)

My favorite is a form of the Swiss triplet, mostly because it's used in Triad by Tool.👍

single paradiddle followed by single drag single paradiddle, four stroke ruff single paradiddle ( these last two are hand to hand ). Flams are my least favorite, though I understand the importance of bringing the hands together for different sounds. I have a routine that I developed thirty five years ago simply by imagining what I wanted to do. It is a fascinating technique that is 3 over 2. I need a way to contact you and will email the written pattern. I have heard Bonham play it, but it is not on anyone else's radar.

Favorite right now is the 6 stroke. Still pretty new to the kit but it's been a fun one to work around and explore while leveling up the doubles incrementally.

I like how Flam taps feel. When you apply it to the kit it sounds pretty dope.

I was messing around with that 3 over 4 thing in Pnuma but I need to get the Swiss Army Triplet faster. I remembered seeing this video but if you don't use "dirty roll" in the search you get 2 other videos that you did on this rudiment. I'm so glad I was able to find this again! *(DIRTY ROLL)*

Blast beats are basically a single stroke roll and I play in a metal band, so it doesn't matter what my favorite is, I can't escape the single stroke roll.
