This is reasonable as well as lying and hiding things from her because being an FBI special agent requires him to put his duties to his country above the interests of his own and loved ones. Country first before anything else is required for him. Lying to her and hiding things from her are also understandable because his job would have something to do with government secrets and of course, telling her the truth which will compromise the secrets and the operation will have him fired and possibly arrested.
