I was invited to Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport (FXE) to meet the pilots, parachutists, and crew, as well as see their awesome aircraft up close: Chris Fucci of the SOCOM Para-Commandos, Mike Wiskus and his Lucas Oil stunt plane, the GEICO Skytypers, and Kirby Chambliss & Red Bull Air Force. This was on Friday, May 7, 2021, one day before the 2021 Fort Lauderdale Air Show on Ft. Lauderdale Beach. The teams were taking off and landing as this was Rehearsal Day for the big show.

PART 3: We get to meet and speak to pilots Tom Daly (#6 - Opposing Solo) and Chris "CT" Thomas (#2 - Right Wing) of the GEICO Skytypers Air Show Team right before they take off for a Friday practice run.

From the official site:
"The GEICO Skytypers Air Show Team flies six WWII era aircraft, the North American SNJ and the T-6 Texan variant. Both were used as advanced training aircraft to prepare pilots of “The Greatest Generation” for WWII. The team performs a low-level, precision demonstration that features maneuvers and tactics flown by the United States military. In addition to air show performances, the team “skytypes” giant messages in the sky. Five aircraft fly in a line abreast formation and type dot-matrix style 1,000-foot tall messages that can be seen for 15 miles in any direction."

PLANE CRASH AT WILKES-BARRE/SCRANTON AIRPORT

There was a fatal accident at approximately 12:36 p.m. on August 20 with the number three aircraft of the GEICO Skytypers Air Show Team as it was departing the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Airport in Avoca, PA. Teammate Andy Travnicek was the pilot involved and sole occupant. There were no injuries on the ground. Andy was a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, served in the U.S. Armed Forces, and was also a commercial airline pilot.

A thorough investigation is already underway. The team is working with local law enforcement, the Federal Aviation Administration, and the National Transportation Safety Board. Our thoughts and prayers are with Andy's wife and family at this time.

ANDY “TRAV” TRAVNICEK
ALTERNATE LEFT WING
At a young age, Andy Travnicek knew he wanted to become a pilot after flying in a Cessna with a local pilot in his hometown, Southbridge, MA. He later attended the U.S. Air Force Academy where he learned how to fly gliders and became a pilot instructor. Following graduation, Andy flew the C-21 Learjet, Lockheed C-5 Galaxy (including for special operation missions), T-34C Turbomentor, T-6 Texan II, and MC-12 Liberty ISR aircraft.

During his military service, Andy completed deployments to Spain, Qatar and Afghanistan and also worked with cadets at the U.S. Air Force Academy as a staff member.

He enjoyed flying warbirds to honor the men and women of all eras and all branches of the U.S. military. Andy aspired to inspire young people to pursue interests and careers in aviation.

Andy earned his undergraduate degree in aeronautical engineering from the U.S. Air Force Academy and also had an MBA from Nova Southeastern University. Andy served as a first officer with a major airline and resided in New Hampshire with his wife. When not flying, he could be found riding motorcycles, running, biking, swimming, hiking, reading, snowboarding, or paddling.

Their formation flying was good, but the legibility of the typing depended too much on still air, which is seldom available. I believe the New York team has been disbanded for a few years now.
