The iron lung is an example of negative pressure ventilator. Modern ventilators use positive pressure.

Thank you.  Now I understand even less about an iron lung than I did before watching this.

I saw lots of pictures of kids smiling while in this, all those people never getting out of that again, heart breaking

Thank u Sir for this nice video. This iron lung operating with negative pressure mechanism has less incidence of injury to lung which can help in decreasing Injuries caused by present day ventilators which use positive pressure . I was looking how this works. Thanks again 🙏🙏

Yo as someone who knew a surprising amount about Iron lungs this was actually really helpful. I never really understood how the iron lung got air into the body but this helped. Thanks!

That is only a partial explanation. It does 2 things. It does lower the air pressure around the person, but the mechanical vacuum itself , as the bellow pulls out, it aids the persons chest expansion. When the bellow pushes in, it helps the person contract their chest, expelling spent air.

An iron lung is originally used for Polio.

Imagine being trapped in a rusted submarine at the bottom of a blood ocean? Yeah, seems crazy, would definitely love to see that.

why did these things exist i’d rather die than have to lay down for the rest of my life

I’m still confused how this thing works. I understand the movement of the air, but how does it get in the patients lungs? Through the mouth? Nostrils? Or is there something hooked up to the lungs inside of the tube?

So what ur saying is it's all based off of a simple vacume to expand and contract the chest to simulate breathing. While the head is out side of the machine for collecting and expelling air, which sustains nice

How do people sleep in these things? I wouldn’t be able to let my mind drift to sleep knowing a machine was breathing for me in the case that it broke down while I was asleep

How does the patient breath when they need to clean them or open the lung for some reason?

Yes I'm aware the farts could get out when it's opened, but I image the patient wears diapers so this smell would be far worse.

Can't they put game controllers on their hands and make the whole container move, maybe even use mirrors to move

I don't see how that works. The pressure on his nasal passages is the same as atmospheric.

Guess whatever education you lot got was very frugal in basic Physics. This is based on Boyles law (when volume increases, the pressure decreases. Its an inverse law). Basically, pulling the other end out (which emulates the diaphragm) the volume or space inside is increased which means the pressure inside the iron lung AND inside the patient drops. This creates a pressure difference/gradient between inside the lung(low pressure) and the outside (High Pressure). Air rushes in to make the pressures inside and outside equal. Simples!
