How has DRM evolved over the years, and where do we see it going?

DRM makes things harder on legitimate users, not pirates.

I am strangely happy that more people support piracy than DRM

The Witcher 3 doesn't have DRM and they spent so many years working on it, that's why CD Projekt Red is backrupted right now, right? Oh wait a minute....

DRM is like locking a bolt down with a padlock when the door is wide open and mounted on short open hinges.  Completely useless to everyone involved even if you do actually remember to close the door before locking the bolt.

When your DRM requires me to go out of my way to use what I bought, that's where it crosses a line.

*Piracy is a service issue.* It's a result of people being unable (or unwilling) to get what they want legally. People want media and they will gladly pay for it. Before Steam, I used to torrent games all the time. Since Steam, I haven't even considered torrenting a game. Why? Because Steam makes getting games easier.

Companies need to realize that they are not going to win against pirates and trying to stop them isn't going to work.

Law sometimes can be a bullshit, for example... 8 years sentence for raping an underage girl, but 10 years sentence for "illegally downloading a song over the internet", since when pirating a music are "more evil" than raping an underage girl ?

DRM is a JOKE all it does is screw people like me who actually pay for crap!
I don't care if someone steals a game or program whatever, just don't bone me for paying you!

State of the world: 90+% of pirates are pirating just because they're sick of DRMs.
Reaction of the content producers: We shall introduce *more* DRMs!

Sim Cities from 2014 had always online DRM.
It was also the most pirated game of the year.
DRM can backfire really hard if it is not done properly and in a fair manner.

DRM is fucking bullshit I had to pirate a copy of GTA V even though I bought it, because I couldn't play when my internet was down. I get more restrictions than a pirate.

DRM reminds me on Jigsaw

"Hello, I want to play a game. You're probably wondering where you are. I'll tell you where you might be. You might be in the room you´re going nuts... Look at your Smart TV. You purchased for $10 a Video-on-Demand-Title in 4K. Your license allows you to watch it exactly one time, so listen to me:

If you try to watch it without filling up all required and optional fields in your Streaming-Account, your license expires.
If you try to bypass the DRM, your license expires.
If you try to watch it on uncertified hardware, your license expires.
If you hit the record- or rewind-button on your remote, your license expires.
If you don´t accept the use of your personal data for commercial purposes, your license expires.
If you don´t grant access to the TV-Webcam, Microphone and GPS sensor, your license expires.
If you look away while ads are visible, your license expires.
If your internet connection is lost, your license expires.

Most people are so ungrateful to watch Free Content, but not you, not any more..."

If i had for instance a game studio (i am studying programming) i would rstrain drm to the level that a one-time verification with an account is required. Pirates will always eventually break the lock and legit users shouldn`t have to complicate themselves with 30-word verification sentences that have to be introduced three times in different order all while reading out loud captcha to the computers. Most pirates would not afford or not consider the game worth the price anyway, so we could even publish a cracked version ourselves, asking the player to purchase the game if he enjoys it at startup. Yet there would need to be a crack, if you can`t install a crack, you don`t deserve to play the game for free.

I was hoping Linus would go into how some DRM embedded in games causes performance issues such as in Lords of the Fallen, and Arkham Knight.
