My thing with the "haunted tree" is that it's most likely some sort of allergic reaction/chemical exposure to something in the immediate vicinity of the tree (some sort of chemical in the soil, a toxic plant, something). If it were some sort of curse or something, it'd most likely affect people in different ways (look at the Curse of Tut...it supposedly affected quite a few people with a huge number of unconnected (but highly coincidental) methods of death)...similar effects tend to mean a terrestrial occurrence.
