James Caan was as good as any actor in the 70s and he's so damn good in this (and he was ad-libbing so much of his dialogue too)

Loved, loved, loved this movie as a kid when I discovered the buddy cop format, done better here than many others since and (as I now understand) totally ad-libbed. Probably the first movie made that was intent on destroying as many vehicles as they could... setting the genre..

My sister and I laughed all the way home after we saw this. The next best one is Running Scared with Greg Hines and Billy Crustal!!!! Similar relationship.

James Caan and Alan Arkin would have reunited for an Orion Pictures film called "Homemade Sausages and War", which never got made. One wonders what that movie would have been like or what it would have been about.

My Dad was a police officer. I took him to see this film when I was an usher at a movie theater. It was a little uncomfortable sitting next to him during the one scene with Freebie and his girlfriend, but what I remember most is when the characters went to arrest Red Myers, and my Dad's reaction of-- "Oh, NO!"

This was a terrific movie with lots of chemistry between the two leads and great supporting cast. Only one problem. The flipping sound is awful..
